The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities, ensuring they have equal opportunities in areas like employment, transportation, education, and access to public facilities. The ADA also sets standards for accessibility in public and commercial buildings, including proper signage for rooms and spaces.

ADA compliance requires signage for every permanent room, space, or area in or around a building. The law categorizes signage into four main types, each addressing a specific need:

  1. Identification Signs: These are the most common ADA sign type, used to identify specific rooms or areas within a building. Examples include signs for “Restroom,” “Elevator,” or “Accounts Payable Department.”

  2. Informational Signs: These provide additional context about a room or building feature without identifying the room itself. For example, signs like “Employees Only” or “No Smoking” fall under this category.

  3. Directional or Wayfinding Signs: These signs help people navigate a building, guiding them to various areas. Found in locations like offices, hotels, sports arenas, schools, and more, these signs include arrows and directions such as “Faculty Offices Here” or “Restrooms This Way.”

  4. Overhead Signs: These signs are mounted on ceilings or vertically on walls, at a height of at least 80 inches above the floor. This ensures that individuals with limited vision can safely navigate. Overhead signs typically contain both informational and directional text.

At Moxey Signs and Graphics, we ensure your building's signage meets all ADA requirements, helping make your space accessible and inclusive.
